Question:

A woman asks in her question: Honorable Shaykh, regarding colored contact lenses: Is it permissible to use contact lenses that change the eye color from black to green or blue, for the purpose of beautifying oneself for one’s husband?

Answer:

I am truly astonished that the creation of Allah, upon which He formed the human being—and He created humans in the best of forms—is being changed. I marvel that this natural form given by Allah is altered using these contact lenses that turn the eyes green, yellow, blue, or red. In reality, this is part of the trials that people have been afflicted with. Its reality stems back to foreign manufacturers, who export these lenses to us from their factories; lenses that cost very little to manufacture, yet are sold for many times over what they actually cost.

I say: A woman should not use these lenses in general. If using them causes harm to the eye, then it is Haram (forbidden); because anything that causes harm to the body is prohibited. A person’s body is a trust given to them, and it is not permissible to alter it with something that harms it.

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: “And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you.” [An-Nisa’, 4:29].

And He, the Exalted, said: “…and do not throw yourselves into destruction (by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allah)” [Al-Baqarah, 2:195].

Furthermore, Allah has made it obligatory for a sick person to perform Tayammum (dry ablution) if using water would harm them. Therefore, it is not permissible for a woman to wear these lenses if doctors determine that they are harmful to her eyes. However, even if there is no harm, my advice to women is not to wear them.
