Question:

May Allah be good to you. Muhammad Hassan from Yemen asks: Is performing the Adhan in the newborn’s ear and the Iqamah in the other ear a Sunnah or not, and what is the authenticity of the narrations (Hadiths) regarding this matter?

Answer:

As for the narrations (Hadiths) regarding the Iqamah in the left ear, they are weak.

As for the narration concerning the Adhan in the right ear, it is acceptable, though it is also subject to some scholarly criticism. However, this is to be performed immediately at birth. The scholars have stated: ‘The wisdom behind this is that the very first thing the child hears should be the Adhan, which is the call to prayer and success, and which contains the magnification of Allah, His declaration of oneness (Tawheed), and the testimony of His Prophet’s—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—messengership.’
