Question:
Is it permissible for a person praying alone to pray without an Adhan?
Answer:
Yes, it is permissible for him to pray without an Adhan. However, if he is in the open countryside, a remote farm, or a similar isolated place, it is legislated for him to give the Adhan even if he will be praying alone.
Giving the Iqamah is also prescribed for him unconditionally, based on the general textual evidences and the statement of the noble Companion Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) to Abdullah al-Ansari:
“I see that you love sheep and the countryside. So when you are among your sheep or in your countryside and you give the call to prayer, raise your voice with the call, for no jinn, human, or anything else hears the reach of the muezzin’s voice except that it will bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abu Sa’id said: “I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”
This was collected by Imam Ahmad and Al-Bukhari.
And Allah is the Grantor of success. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
