The Guidance of the Quran and the Character of the Transgressors
The Noble Quran is a Book of guidance, clarification, counsel, and direction. In it is news of what came before us, information of what comes after us, and a ruling for what is between us. Whoever acts upon it is rewarded, whoever judges by it is just, and whoever calls to it is guided to a straight path.
Among the upright indications and noble guidances of the Quran is its exposure of the path of the criminals and its clarification of the state of those who earned wrath and those who went astray, so that believers may recognize it and avoid it, so their condition is uncovered to them so they may guard against it, and so that their enemy becomes clear to them so they may beware of him. Allah Almighty says:
“And thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail, that the way of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners), may become manifest.” [Al-An’am: 55].
That is, so that their path becomes clear, their matter is exposed, and their condition is made evident, allowing the believers to beware of them.
Quranic Characterization
The indications and guidances of the Noble Quran state that the people most intense in plotting against the believers, greatest in enmity towards them, most vile in evil and deceit, and most harborers of hatred are the Jews—that detested, wrath-incurring nation that earned, due to its evil deeds and vile actions, the anger, curse, hatred, and displeasure of Allah. They are a cursed, wrath-incurring nation, a abhorred and disdained sect due to the ingrained evil, accumulated malice, and great corruption within them. Allah Almighty says:
“Say (O Muhammad ﷺ to the people of the Scripture): ‘Shall I inform you of something worse than that, regarding the recompense from Allah: those (Jews) who incurred the Curse of Allah and His Wrath, those of whom (some) He transformed into monkeys and swines, those who worshipped Taghut (false deities); such are worse in rank (on the Day of Resurrection in the Hell-fire), and far more astray from the Right Path (in the life of this world).’” [Al-Ma’idah: 60]
And Almighty says:
“You see many of them taking the disbelievers as their Auliya’ (protectors and helpers). Evil indeed is that which their ownselves have sent forward before them, for that (reason) Allah’s Wrath fell upon them and in torment they will abide.” [Al-Ma’idah: 80]
And Almighty says:
“How bad is that for which they have sold their ownselves, that they should disbelieve in that which Allah has revealed (the Quran), grudging that Allah should reveal of His Grace unto whom He will of His slaves. So they have drawn on themselves wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers, there is disgracing torment.” [Al-Baqarah: 90]
Allah also described them in the Holy Quran as having hard hearts: “Then, after that, your hearts were hardened and became as stones or even worse in hardness.” [Al-Baqarah: 74].
Historical Transgressions
When the Torah was presented to them—which is the speech, revelation, and scripture of Allah—they rejected it and refused to accept it. So Allah commanded Gabriel (peace be upon him) to uproot a mountain from its foundation in the earth according to their size, then raised it above their heads, and it was said to them: “If you do not accept it, We will drop it upon you.” So they accepted it reluctantly.
Allah Almighty says:
“And (remember) when We raised the mountain over them as if it had been a canopy, and they thought that it was going to fall on them. (We said): “Hold firmly to what We have given you [i.e. the Taurat (Torah)], and remember that which is therein (act on its commandments), so that you may fear Allah and obey Him.”” [Al-A’raf: 171]
And Almighty says:
“And (O Children of Israel, remember) when We took your covenant and We raised above you the Mount (saying): “Hold fast to that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2). Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah upon you, indeed you would have been among the losers.” [Al-Baqarah: 63-64]
When Moses (peace be upon him) called them to faith in Allah and His revelation, they refrained and said: “We will not believe you until we see Allah plainly with our eyes.” So Allah sent down a thunderbolt from the sky that killed them for their sins, then resurrected them after their death so that they might be grateful.
Allah Almighty says:
“And (remember) when you said: “O Musa (Moses)! We shall never believe in you till we see Allah plainly.” But you were seized with a thunderbolt (lightning) while you were looking. Then We raised you up after your death, so that you might be grateful.” [Al-Baqarah: 55-56]
Among their ignominies is that they took the calf as a deity instead of Allah, despite having witnessed the painful punishment and severe penalty Allah inflicted upon the polytheists, and while their Prophet was alive among them. They saw with their own eyes the maker of the calf crafting it, shaping it, placing it in fire, striking it with a hammer, applying a file to it, and turning it upside down with his hands. Despite all this, they worshipped it instead of Allah. They were not satisfied with that until they falsely claimed it to be the god of Moses (peace be upon him): “They said: “This is your ilah (god), and the ilah (god) of Musa (Moses), but [Musa (Moses)] has forgotten (his god).’” [Ta Ha: 88].
Allah Almighty says:
“And (remember) when We appointed for Musa (Moses) forty nights, and (in his absence) you took the calf (for worship), and you were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). Then after that We forgave you so that you might be grateful.” [Al-Baqarah: 51-52]
Thus, despite the succession of proofs against them and the abundance of blessings from Allah, at times they asked their Prophet to make for them a god other than Allah, at times they worshipped the calf besides Allah, and at times they said: “We will not believe you until we see Allah plainly.” When Allah saved them from Pharaoh, his dominance, and his oppression, parted the sea for them, showed them signs and wonders, granted them victory, and gave them shelter—when their Prophet called them to fight, they refused and said: “So go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here.” [Al-Ma’idah: 24].
Among their atrocities is that it was said to them while they were with their Prophet and revelation was descending upon him from Allah:
“And (remember) when We said: ‘Enter this town (Jerusalem) and eat bountifully therein with pleasure and delight wherever you wish, and enter the gate in prostration (or bowing with humility) and say: ‘Forgive us,’ and We shall forgive you your sins and shall increase (reward) for the good-doers.’” [Al-Baqarah: 58]
They were commanded to enter in this state of humility and submission to Allah, yet they insisted on defiance and arrogance. They entered through the gate backwards, retreating on their rear, and said: “Hintah” (meaning a grain of barley) instead of “Hittah” (asking for forgiveness). Allah Almighty says:
“But those who did wrong changed the word from that which had been told to them for another, so We sent upon the wrong-doers Rijzan (a punishment) from the heaven because of their rebelling against Allah’s Obedience. (Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. I, Page 305).” [Al-Baqarah: 59]
Among their ignominies is that they killed the prophets—through whom alone guidance could be attained—and took their rabbis as lords beside Allah. They accused the Prophet of Allah, Jesus, and his mother of grave accusations, and claimed that they had killed him:
“Because of their breaking the covenant, and of their rejecting the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and of their killing the Prophets unjustly, and of their saying: “Our hearts are wrapped (with coverings, i.e. we do not understand what the Messengers say)” - nay, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they believe not but a little. And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse); And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)]: But Allah raised him [‘Iesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise.” [An-Nisa: 155-158]
Among their ignominies is that they attributed to Allah what is inappropriate and described Him with that from which He—Exalted is He—is far removed. Among these was their saying that Allah grew tired and rested when He created the heavens and the earth. So Allah revealed, in refutation of them: “And indeed We created the heavens and the earth and all between them in six Days and nothing of fatigue touched Us.” [Qaf: 38]—meaning no fatigue.
Another was their saying: “Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of those (Jews) who say: ‘Truly, Allah is poor and we are rich!’ We shall record what they have said and their killing of the Prophets unjustly, and We shall say: ‘Taste you the torment of the burning (Fire).’”** [Ali ‘Imran: 181].
They also said: “The Jews say: ‘Allah’s Hand is tied up (i.e. He does not give and spend of His Bounty).’ Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for what they uttered. Nay, both His Hands are widely outstretched. He spends (of His Bounty) as He wills.” [Al-Ma’idah: 64].
Despite this immense disbelief and clear slander, they claim Paradise for themselves and assert that they are the best of Allah’s creation and His chosen people:
“And they say, ‘None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian.’ These are their own desires. Say (O Muhammad, peace be upon him), ‘Produce your proof if you are truthful.’” [Al-Baqarah: 111],
And “And (both) the Jews and the Christians say: ‘We are the children of Allah and His loved ones.’ Say: ‘Why then does He punish you for your sins?’ Nay, you are but human beings, of those He has created,…” [Al-Ma’idah: 18].
What we should know here is that after the Jews attempted to kill the Messiah, Jesus (peace be upon him), and Allah protected him from that, their condition remained in decline and degradation until Allah dispersed them into nations across the earth, tore them completely apart, and stripped them of their power and sovereignty. No kingdom was established for them after that until Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), but they disbelieved in him and denied him.
Thus, Allah fulfilled His wrath upon them, destroyed them completely, and bound them to humiliation and disgrace that will not be lifted until Jesus (peace be upon him) descends at the end of time to eradicate them, eliminate their remnant, and purify the earth of them and the worshippers of the cross.
This is a fraction of what has been revealed in the Holy Quran regarding the state of this wrath-incurring and cursed nation, so that Muslims may know something of their dark history and their shadow-filled life laden with disbelief, aggression, injustice, and slander, and so they know that their evil acts cannot be trusted, their crimes never end, and they never cease from transgression and enmity at any time.
It is also so that the Muslim appreciates the extent of Allah’s blessing upon him with this pure religion and the gift of knowledge and faith He bestowed. So to Allah belongs all praise, first and last. The believer in all his states and affairs—in hardship and ease, in joy and distress—has no refuge except in Allah, and no sanctuary except with his Lord, Master, and Sovereign.
O our God, to You alone is the complaint, and You are sufficient for us. O You who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, mends the brokenhearted when he cries out, and relieves the anxiety of the distressed when he humbles himself before Him and hopes in Him! Our God, the Jews have dominated our Muslim brothers and sisters in Palestine through killing and displacement, through the destruction and demolition of their homes, and through the violation and corruption of their sanctities. How many homes have been destroyed, how many honor code boundaries violated, how many women widowed, how much blood spilled, and how many children orphaned! Their tyranny has escalated, their assault and criminality have increased, and their arrogance and aggression have grown vast. Our God, O You from Whom victory and honor are sought! O You Whose doors and treasuries are opened to whoever calls upon Him! O Shaker of the thrones of oppressors, O Breaker of the backs of tyrants, O Nullifier of the plots of criminals! O Allah, deal with the aggressive transgressors. O Allah, we place You at their throats and seek refuge in You from their evil.
