Question:

May Allah reward you with goodness. In his second question, this listener asks: My wife’s family is causing distress for me and my wife. What is the ruling on shunning them and stopping visits to them?

Answer:

You have the right to shun them and not visit them if visiting them causes harm to you or corrupts your wife. You have the right to refrain from visiting them, and you also have the right to prevent your wife from visiting them.

I strongly advise those who drive a wedge between a man and his wife, and I say: Their action is like the action of sorcerers—and refuge is sought with Allah.

It is obligatory to refrain from interfering in what happens between spouses. If it happens that one of the spouses falls short in their duties, they should be advised directly, without bringing it up to their partner in a way that creates jealousy or resentment in their heart. Being clear and straightforward is obligatory to the best of one’s ability, and it is better in all circumstances. Yes.
