Ruling on women taking the husband's surname after marriage

Stream / External

Question:

Is it permissible for a woman after marriage to give up her family name and take her husband’s name, as is the case in the West?

Answer:

This is not permissible. Attributing one’s lineage to anyone other than one’s father is Haram (forbidden) in Islam. It is forbidden for a Muslim to attribute themselves to anyone other than their father, whether it is a man or a woman. There is a severe warning against this, and the one who does it is cursed—the one who attributes themselves to other than their masters, or attributes themselves to other than their father. This is never permissible.
