Question:
If a town has a mosque where Friday and congregational prayers are held, is it permissible to perform the prayer without the Adhan (call to prayer) and Iqamah (second call to prayer)? If someone omits the phrase “As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm” (Prayer is better than sleep) in the Fajr Adhan due to a lack of knowledge, is the prayer valid without a legitimate excuse, provided the time for the prayer has not elapsed? Furthermore, if someone performs the Iqamah in the exact manner of the Adhan, or recites the Iqamah only once due to a lack of knowledge, is the prayer valid without it and without a legitimate excuse?
Answer:
The Adhan is a ‘communal obligation’ (Fard Kifayah) for the town, and the same applies to the Iqamah. When intending to perform the prayer, one should make the Iqamah before entering into it. If someone enters into the prayer without an Adhan or an Iqamah—due to forgetfulness, ignorance, or any other reason—their prayer is valid.
Similarly, if they omit the phrase “As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm” entirely in the Fajr Adhan, their prayer is valid even if the time for the prayer is still remaining.
And Allah is the Grantor of success. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
