Question:

How do we show dutifulness to polytheist parents after the separation between Muslims and polytheists, given that they remained among the polytheists? Is it permissible for us to be dutiful to them while they are in their location among the polytheists or not?

Answer:

One should be dutiful to them with whatever is feasible for him, even if they are in the lands of the polytheists. This is due to the generality of the saying of Allah Almighty:

“But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience.” [Luqman, 31:15], as well as other general verses and hadiths regarding dutifulness to parents.

And Allah is the Grantor of success. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
