Question:
Is there any basis for kissing the two thumbs when the muezzin says “Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah” (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)?
Answer:
As far as we know, it has not been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the thumbs should be kissed upon hearing the muezzin say “Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.”
Therefore, kissing them at that moment is bid’ah (an innovation). It is authentically established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours something that is not from it, it will be rejected.”
And Allah is the Grantor of success. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
