The Methodology of the Salaf Regarding the Divine Attributes
Shaykh al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah Ta’ala have mercy on him said:
As for the Salafiyyah (the way of the Salaf): According to what is narrated by al-Khattabi, Abu Bakr al-Khatib, and others, they stated that the madhhab of the Salaf is to run the hadiths and verses concerning the divine attributes according to their apparent meaning, while negating any modality or resemblance to creation.
Therefore, we do not say that the meaning of the Hand is power, nor that the meaning of Hearing is knowledge. This is because speaking about the attributes is a branch of speaking about the “Divine Essence” (Dhat); it follows the exact same path and mirrors the same example. Thus, just as affirming the Essence is an affirmation of existence and not an affirmation of modality, the same applies to affirming the attributes: it is an affirmation of existence, not an affirmation of modality.
Indeed, al-Khattabi and al-Khatib—both of whom are imams among the followers of al-Shafi’i, whose mastery of transmitted reports is undisputed, and al-Khatby’s mastery of meanings is well-recognized—have informed you that the school of the Salaf is to take them according to their apparent meanings while negating modality and likeness. And Allah knows that I have striven deeply in researching the schools of the Salaf, and I have not known a single one of them to have disagreed with this.
