Questioner: Following the father’s death, some photos remained…
Shaykh: Yes.
Questioner: …that belong to him; photographs with some family members…
Shaykh: Yes.
Questioner: …and a television.
Shaykh: Yes.
Questioner: So if these are left [as they are], does any liability remain upon him, bearing in mind that he used to dislike these things?
Shaykh: Yes, he says that his father left behind photos of himself with the family, either on paper or on videotape. If the heirs retain them, does any of the sin attach to the deceased, even though he used to dislike that? The answer is that: As for the deceased, no liability attaches to him as long as he disliked it. However, the liability falls upon them [the heirs]. Inform them that they must burn them completely, because keeping them renews the memory of the deceased and the grief over him; what is appropriate is for a person to let the memory of the affliction fade. Yes.
Questioner: The television—there is still a television in the house.
Shaykh: No, I understood it to be a picture of a television.
Questioner: Both.
Shaykh: Both?
Questioner: Yes.
Shaykh: No, as for the television, he is not held accountable for it as long as he was averse to it; but how is it that he did not forbid it during his lifetime?
Questioner: He was procrastinating; he was ill and said, “In Shaa Allah (God willing), when I recover…”
Shaykh: When he recovers, he will remove it?
Questioner: In Shaa Allah.
Shaykh: No, this is procrastination; undoubtedly, he bears a sin for it.
