The Virtues and Trials of Enjoining Good and Forbidding Wrong

Shaykh Abdul-Aziz al-Rajhi, may Allah preserve him, said:

Enjoining good and forbidding wrong is one of the morals of the believers and one of their commendable traits, and this is simply because it is a call to Allah and His religion. Islam did not spread across the East and the West except through calling to it, clarifying its merits, virtues, and etiquettes, and through enjoining good and forbidding wrong.

However, the caller to Allah, the one who enjoins good, and the one who forbids wrong will inevitably face harm. Therefore, he is in need of patience regarding whatever harm people may inflict upon him—whether by word or by deed. Among the advice of Luqman the Wise to his son, as related by Allah, is establishing prayer, enjoining good, forbidding wrong, and being patient in the face of adversity. Allah the Almighty says, recounting his words:

‘O my son! Establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.’ (Luqman 31:17)
