Ruling on Reciting Salawat After the Adhan

Question:

What is the ruling on the muezzin saying this phrase after the legal Adhan: “As-salamu wa as-salamu ‘alayka ya awwala khalqi Allah wa khatama rusulih” (Blessings and peace be upon you, O first of Allah’s creation and finality of His messengers)?

Answer:

We know of no evidence from the Quran or the Sunnah that indicates the legitimacy of this supplication after the Adhan.

All goodness lies in following the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and all evil lies in opposing his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him). It is authentically established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever performs an action that is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected.”

However, it is legislated after the Adhan—for the muezzin and others—to invoke blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then to say: “Allahumma Rabba hadhihi ad-da’wah at-tammah, wa as-salah al-qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wab’athu maqaman mahmudan alladhi wa’adtah” (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the Wasilah [highest rank in Paradise] and virtue, and resurrect him to the praise-worthy station that You have promised him).

This is based on what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “When you hear the muezzin, say the like of what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times. Then ask Allah for the Wasilah for me, for it is a station in Paradise that befits only one servant of Allah, and I hope that I am he. Whoever asks for the Wasilah for me will be granted my intercession.” (Narrated by Muslim).

And his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Whoever says upon hearing the call: ‘O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the Wasilah and virtue, and resurrect him to the praise-worthy station that You have promised him’—my intercession is guaranteed for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih, with Al-Bayhaqi adding at the end with an authentic chain: “Indeed, You do not break [Your] promise”).

However, the muezzin and others should say this in a quiet voice and not raise their voice with it, because there is no transmission indicating that it should be said aloud, as previously explained.

And Allah knows best. Allah is the Grantor of success. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
