Who is meant by the reference 'Related by the Three or Five Compilers'

The Three Compilers are Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, and Al-Nasa’i, whereas the Five Compliers refers to the three Imams mentioned previously along with Ibn Majah and Imam Ahmad.
